Open to the bar

There wasn't anything to do in an empty apartment but flip through channels that showed the same propaganda, the same scare tactics and pray she wouldn't have to go to bed alone. Praying led to worrying and from then on she couldn't pull herself out of her state until she called him. She didn't like to seem dependent, no matter how much truth there was to that.

Meet me at O'Shaughnessy's.

It was the best message she could've found waiting on her answering machine and at the best of times. Now, if only Jamie hadn't sounded like the world was ending, then she might've actually looked forward to seeing him.

Waiting in the dim bar fifteen minutes later, her back to the wall and not the door, she only brightened up a little at the thought of company.
3rd-Oct-2007 12:20 am (UTC)
He was well into his first glass when she arrived, slumped in his chair and absently folding napkins. He'd never been a big drinker, but sometimes he needed the comfort of a chemical indulgence to wipe it all from his mind. The Valium wasn't doing the trick anymore.

Jamie nodded in greeting as she sat down, giving her a weak smile. "I'm buying."
3rd-Oct-2007 12:22 am (UTC)
"I hope so," she grinned, smile slipping just a little at his expression. "I'm broke."

Ordering whatever he was having for herself, she propped her feet up on the edge of an empty chair, concerned but not wanting to show it. Odds were she couldn't change anything anyway.
3rd-Oct-2007 12:30 am (UTC)
He took another long pull from his glass, setting it down in front of him. Part of him wanting to tell her, part just wanting her Company. Still another part too afraid to leave this bar and needing her to remind him why he had to.

"Still reading Jimmy's reports?" he asked quietly, tapping his fingers on the glass.
3rd-Oct-2007 12:32 am (UTC)
"Me? Never have and never will." Which was a yes in disguise but to admit it would be to admit she cared and that was a whole different headache.

But her smile went unnoticed. Something was up, and it wasn't instinct telling her that much. Jamie was always easy to read for her.

"What happened?" she asked, voice soft and low, intimate.
3rd-Oct-2007 12:34 am (UTC)
"They've been making me visit Dr. Suresh," he responded, staring into his glass, not bothering to lie to her.
3rd-Oct-2007 12:41 am (UTC)
The infamous Doctor. She winced.

"Well... shit." A waiter brought her drink, appearing just at the right time, just as she lost all capacity to encourage her partner in anyway. There were some things you couldn't remedy with words.
3rd-Oct-2007 12:44 am (UTC)
"And I may have threatened to kill him," he continued, a trace of irony in his tones. "And he may've told Parkman."

He finished the words off with another gulp, wishing he would've gone for something stronger.
3rd-Oct-2007 01:04 am (UTC)
A blink, because there was no way she'd just heard what she'd just heard.

"Wait. What?" Drawing herself up until she covered his hand with her own, she sought his gaze. "You threatened Suresh?"
3rd-Oct-2007 01:06 am (UTC)
"He killed him," Jamie said brokenly, pulling away from her touch. "In front of me. He put that stuff in him..."
3rd-Oct-2007 01:11 am (UTC)
"Him..." For one long, horrible moment, she thought he meant Kirin and her heart just about stopped. But no, he wouldn't still be standing if that were true.

And they wouldn't lose Kirin over something so trivial.

"One of your dupes. He killed one of your dupes." She shouldn't have sounded so relieved, even if she felt it. It wasn't right.
3rd-Oct-2007 01:16 am (UTC)
He looked at her for a long moment before pushing himself to his feet.

"Forget it. I shouldn't have said anything."

You don't understand. You can't.
3rd-Oct-2007 01:18 am (UTC)
"Jamie, no," she intercepted him, standing as well. "Come on, sit down. I'm sorry." She didn't understand, but that didn't mean she didn't want to.

"Who're you going to tell? Kirin?" Their relationship was full of guilt and protected feelings. Just like hers used to be with Jimmy.
3rd-Oct-2007 01:22 am (UTC)
He hesitated, sitting back down, pressing his hands over his eyes. "I'm sorry. I didn't...I'm sorry."

I can't tell Kirin. He doesn't need that from me. Not now.
3rd-Oct-2007 01:25 am (UTC)
"Don't be sorry, you didn't do anything wrong." Except the part where he threatened to kill a superior who had a hot-line to the president and who could very well have them both killed just to test out his newest pet project.

"Have another drink. And talk."
3rd-Oct-2007 01:29 am (UTC)
He gave her the barest hint of a nod, sipping from his glass and lowering his gaze to the table.

"I know you don't understand. I get that. And it's hard to explain what they are to me. Like a twin, but it's...it's so much deeper than that."

Jamie swallowed hard, tracing the rim of his glass.

"In the field, it's every man for himself. They have as good a chance as I do. But this...there was no way out. No escape. He just...murdered me right in front of my eyes."
3rd-Oct-2007 01:31 am (UTC)
That... couldn't have been pleasant. On a different level, she thought she understood it. Besides, ever since they first met, Jamie had had a thing for being locked in.

"What was he testing for this time, do you know?" she asked after a long moment. This was how information was gathered, how rumors started.
3rd-Oct-2007 01:35 am (UTC)
Jamie shook his head slightly. "He kept talking about the people it would save, how it was for the greater good. About testing it on my 'colleagues', if not my dupes."

He sunk his teeth into his bottom lip. "I think it has to do with...what we can do."
3rd-Oct-2007 01:37 am (UTC)
"No kidding," she muttered, passing a hand through her hair. It was too long. "If they tested on you it means it's not safe to try on the rest of us yet. We're not replaceable."

Was it a cure? Was it something to finally help them get rid of the mutation?
3rd-Oct-2007 01:41 am (UTC)
"Lucky me," he murmured. "I die and hey, there's another to take my place."

Jamie looked up at her, tightening his jaw. "I can't do it, Candice. I can't let them do that to me."
3rd-Oct-2007 01:43 am (UTC)
That was dangerous; that was the kind of talk that got you locked up, if not worse.

"What do you want to do if not take it?" she hissed, lowering her voice even as she was sure they were all wired enough with trackers and things in their clothes and cell phones and skin, that simply the act of opening their mouths was dissent enough.
3rd-Oct-2007 01:46 am (UTC)
"I don't know," he whispered, covering his face with his hands. "It's too much. On top of everything, its too damn much."

Jamie shook his head, despair sitting heavy in his chest.

"There's going to be nothing left of me."
3rd-Oct-2007 01:51 am (UTC)
"Don't say that," she begged, heart going out to him before she remembered she didn't have on. That was why she'd been hired in the first place, wasn't it? She was the heartless bitch who shot when you told her to shoot.

"Don't say that," she reiterated, in a different tone. "You'll do what you have to do to survive. Even if it means letting them cut up a part of yourself."
3rd-Oct-2007 01:55 am (UTC)
"I don't want to survive," he murmured, dropping his hands. "He's the only thing keeping me here. Taking care of him."
3rd-Oct-2007 01:57 am (UTC)
Her hand covered his again, not so gently this time.

"James, look at me. You go, I'm next. And I don't want to be next."
3rd-Oct-2007 01:59 am (UTC)
"I can't help it," he whispered, meeting her eyes. "I'm not strong like you. I can't do this. It's too much for me."
3rd-Oct-2007 02:02 am (UTC)
Self-pity stung. She couldn't do anything against it.

"You don't have a choice, James. None of us do." Don't you dare kill yourself.
3rd-Oct-2007 02:06 am (UTC)
He didn't respond, taking another drink and leaning back in his seat, running a hand through his hair. Death was always on his mind these days, sitting there in the back of his thoughts. Wondering what it would be like when it finally stuck.

Suicide was a sin, but so was murder. He was lost either way.
3rd-Oct-2007 02:08 am (UTC)
She drew a deep, low breath, releasing it after ten seconds and starting again. Jimmy had tried teaching her breathing exercises to help her calm down. It didn't seem to matter anymore.

"Don't be so hard on yourself," she advised, finishing her drink in one gulp.
3rd-Oct-2007 02:16 am (UTC)
"I won't do it," he told her, meeting her eyes once again. "I'm just...talking."

Won't leave Kirin alone.
3rd-Oct-2007 02:20 am (UTC)
"Sure you are," she nodded, though she remained unconvinced. "I still need to know you know that. No one's going to punish you for doing what you have do to do... even yourself."
3rd-Oct-2007 02:28 am (UTC)
His gaze flickered away from hers, raising his glass to his lips.

"I know. We do what we have to do." To protect the people we love. There's nothing else.
3rd-Oct-2007 02:30 am (UTC)
"Right," she nodded, knowing that his evasiveness wasn't a good sign, knowing she should have been worrying more than she was. As long as he had Kirin, he would be okay, she told herself.
3rd-Oct-2007 02:35 am (UTC)
"Just stay here with me?" he murmured. "I know...I just need someone to talk to without worrying..."

The words made him wince as he heard them leave his mouth.

"I'm sorry. You know I'm a lightweight."
3rd-Oct-2007 02:40 am (UTC)
"I know," she smiled an honest smile for once.

"I'm not going anywhere. All I got home is an empty fridge and a stack of paperwork. Alcohol and sob stories beats that any day."
3rd-Oct-2007 02:54 am (UTC)
He laughed slightly, nodding.

"Alright. Good."
3rd-Oct-2007 02:55 am (UTC)
"Your misery is my misery," she grinned, gesturing to the waiter to bring them another round. If they were going to drink, they were going to drink a lot.

"How's Kirin these days? Haven't seen him in a while."
3rd-Oct-2007 03:07 am (UTC)
"He's...alright. Still antsy, still paranoid. I think I should start leaving dupes for him again." He shook his head. "He was freaked out when I couldn't call the other night."
3rd-Oct-2007 03:08 am (UTC)
Worse rather than better, then, she concluded.

"His missions have been successful lately, though," she commented, remembering the files she wasn't supposed to have seen. "I'm sure he told you that much."
3rd-Oct-2007 03:11 am (UTC)
Jamie nodded, relieved to hear it. "That's something, then." Almost as an afterthought, "Your ex-husband better be taking care of him."
3rd-Oct-2007 03:13 am (UTC)
She downed her drink at that.

"Here's hoping that he keeps doing whatever he's doing." No getting emotional, no talking about Lee when she was half-drunk already.
3rd-Oct-2007 03:19 am (UTC)
"Here's hoping," he echoed, finishing off his own.
