He felt unclean. He could still smell the smoke, knew that it clung to his clothes, even after he walked around until morning. He'd gone into a bathroom, splashed water in his face, but part of him swore there was still soot somewhere, ash in his hair. But no one gave him a second look when he entered the cafe. One large coffee in his hands, he'd made his way back to the apartment, feet knowing the way even as his mind continued to wander. He didn't remember opening the door, but he remembered locking it, tossing the keys on the table and then sitting down.

The first sip still burned his tongue.Collapse )

Open, but ping first

She stripped to a tank top before coming into the room, purposeful and determined, turning her cell off and shoving it to the back of her locker - something which she almost never did. Never mind being reachable, she had time to get a few rounds in.

The training room was empty at this time of night. Empty except for the other figure in the co-ed changing room. No need to talk to him to know who it was. After years of marriage and what felt like an eternity of cohabitation, they know the drill only too well.

Open...ish.

This was moronic. Every day was getting to be the same. No one who was supposedly "special" was. Either Intel had something slipped into their morning coffee or they were actually trying to make a fool out of him. The only reason he'd kept at it was because he thought it was a test.

How long can Homberg last without screwing around? How long will it take for him to snap? When is he going to screw up? When can we send him back...

Down in the garage, the lights were still out and she had to rely on instinct and memory to keep from bumping into walls. God, she hated being down here, and if she could've helped it, if she thought she could leave her car on the street and not find it vandalized, she never would've stepped foot underground willingly. Prelude for the grave, she thought, stepping into the elevator and wondering how long she'd have to wait until he came home.

"I wish you could forget about him."

Hard to do when she used to plan her day around him. She still knew what he liked, she could still judge his mood from the barest flicker of his glance. He was an open book and still, even divorced they'd managed to fall into that one pattern she feared most: the housewife waiting for the husband to come home. Hopefully alive, hopefully in one piece.

Hopefully not planning her execution.

He'd allowed himself half a Vicoden and an hour spent curled up on the side of the couch, having dumped out a can of beer down the sink and set it in front of him as silent explanation for any...off-ness, he might display. Hiding the bandage under a bulky sweatshirt and a blanket, watching whatever trash passed for TV these days.

Forcing himself to remain cool, calm, when the keys turned in the lock.

He was going to kill her when he came to. And if Jamie didn't, Kirin would sure as hell try. It was a fact of life and she'd better accept it. Not that she could blame them. In five years of working with Jamie and another two of being partnered with him, he'd never gotten hit by a bullet because of her.

He'd never gotten hit period.

Leaning forward in her chair, she tapped his wrist with a pen.

"Hurry and wake up already, I'm signing my death sentence over here," she joked half-heartedly, knowing the anesthetic would wear out eventually.

Ask to join in

This was no accident. It had been over a year since Jimmy had been assigned to pick up a target. Special Ops weren't designated for a task that many considered menial, but it didn't mean he would take the job light-heartedly. It was a missive, and there was a purpose for it to be handed out. He glanced over to his temporary partner, the purpose of the assignment clear: stay out of the other agents' way.

Claire watched the news as her biological father appeared on the screen waving in the most uptight manner. People smiled all around him as if the whole world had suddenly become at peace. Everything was serious now and had been for some time. The worst case scenario was happening and all she could do was sit idly by and watch it happen in front of her. She had no other option otherwise because coming forward led to all kinds of danger and she would lose whatever life she had made for herself over the years.

She'd lose Andy, her fiance, who she loved dearly and he was someone she would never give up. He’s was the most normal thing that ever happened to her, with him there were no surprises and she always felt safe. Why would she ever want to leave a life like that behind? Smiling as she thought of him, Claire looked in the backroom to see him hard at work.

He was a good man who made honest and fair decisions. He was unlike her biological father in every way and she loved that most about him. Shaking her head for a moment she then turned off the television. Her break was over and it was time for her to work on getting as many tips as she could to save up for her upcoming wedding.

Her life would continue forward as usual.

Open to the training rooms

Stretching idly, arm folded behind his head, Jamie shook himself slightly, stepping onto the mat.

Given the keyed-up nature of their work, slow days were all the more unbearable. And rather than being stuck in an office writing up reports and pouring over mission statements, begging off to put in some extra training hours was infinitely more attractive.

"So we setting parameters or free for all?"

Jimmy expected that the procedure wouldn't be painless, most experiences involving him and doctors weren't. He had developed a high pain tolerance over the years, his body already bore scars from his experiences. That said, tolerating pain was different from enjoying it, and the body still found ways to rebel against someone, there was so much mental pushing through pain before the body worked for its own best interest.

He had made it home, sore all over and especially at the site of the injection. Mohinder had told him what to be on alert for, and gave Jimmy explicit instructions what to do if he felt worse or different. Curling up on the faded couch in his living room, he tried too sleep, in hope that he'd look more lively for the training session he was slated to lead hours later.

Some questions didn't need to be asked. After the briefing they were told that Kirin and Candice would be sent to a nearby state, due to conflict that had broken out between Enclave and the Milita factions.  It was the responsibility of the the Dept. of National Security to keep the peace, but the mere fact that they were sending Kirin was a sign that the peace was most likely meant to be achieved by force.

Kirin knew that the fact he was being sent instead of Jamie and Candice instead of Jimmy meant it was something that going in with their usual partners would prove to dangerous. They needed the stealth provided from Candice's ability, and Kirin to provide the necessary firepower if it called for it. Which he knew it would.

He looked over at Candice from where he sat in the passenger seat, Kirin was anxious, even moreso that he was out on the field with someone other than Jimmy.  "You know the deal, right? What to do if I...you know, have a panic attack and lose it?" Jimmy was good at handling situations like that, the man's very presence had a calming effect. It was due to having Jimmy as a partner that the extent of how serious Kirin's condition could get was unknown to most.

Joe was out stretching his legs, sick of the tiny apartment, fingers itching to play. Which was stupid and dangerous, he knew all too well, but he couldn't help it. It was his power, and he loved it. He turned the corner, half way around a circuit of his apartment building when he went past a man. He hadn't thought much of it as first, there were plenty of guys that hung about. But this one was familiar.

He turned, tilting his head and taking in the dark hair and light eyes, the way his mouth gripped the cigarette as he fumbled with a lighter. The name came to him when a flickering flash lit up his face. Lance Alvers. He grinned, walking back and without so much as a glance around gave a silent snap of his fingers and stuck the flaming digits half a foot from Lance's face.

"Need a light?"

Candice didn't get many chances to feel like a woman anymore. She'd become an androgynous machine that shot and questioned and followed orders and when her nine-to-five ended, she had to put on another mask and head home. In between, she lost something. Then again, who hadn't, in a place like New York. Sacrifice was everywhere. The beggar on the street corner who she could swear used to be a movie star; the forty-something year old prostitute who lived down the landing from her apartment; hell, maybe even Parkman.

It was easy to pretend she couldn't give a damn when there was blood on her hands and she had to push through. Quiet days when nothing happened were the worst and if, by some accident, her schedule was free and she was sent home early, her whole world threatened to fold in on itself.

She almost called Jamie to pass the time with him, but that wasn't a solution, so she took to wandering the streets. Building after building in various stages of destruction, until at last... a hidden gem. A church. She approached it slowly, as if some godly force might spit her out if she got too near. It was pretty, its architecture not something Candice could speak of in correct terms but that she could appreciate compared to its surroundings.

They needed sleep, both of them, by the looks of it. The monitors didn't lie, he'd missed the last ten blasts and she'd nearly gotten hit twice. Better appreciating her distances would've helped, but the truth was she couldn't be bothered to check the parameters. Most of it was just a formality anyway; he aimed three feet away from her at all times, but depending on the illusion, he sometimes got a little too close.

"Fifty-three," she counted with a sigh, turning her head away from the flash of light before it hit the wall behind her. She still couldn't get used to the sound of it. Another yawn made its way past her lips and she rubbed at her eyes. "Two more?" she suggested, flickering into his field of vision briefly.

Even though he completed all of his poomsaes that he knew from memory and each of the sixty-eight movements in the Yoo Sin, but Jimmy was still unable to clear his mind. Perhaps an actual sparring session would have helped, but all he could think about was the perspiration on his skin and the heavy weight in his chest. He was relaxed to an extent, and focused. Yet he was unable to let go of a lingering thought. He wandered along barefoot through the corridor of the research floor; looking out of place among the men and women in suits and lab coats while he was in track pants and a tank.

Toying with the idea of calling someone was probably the smarter and safest idea to do with thoughts like these, but he was tired of playing safe. He had to know.

With that, he struck his keycard to the restricted door and stepped inside.

It wasn't the lack of food in the house that bothered her the most, but the lack of alcohol. She and Jimmy had drunk the last beer, smoked the last cigarette and finality of it gave her the creeps. All it took was for someone to put a bullet in her cranium and that would end that story.

"Mornings make me cranky, James," she sighed into the phone as she picked it up on its final ring, her head swimming with the remnants of sleep and nightmare. Anyone else and she might have never picked up, but Jamie was prone to worry. He thought something was wrong and he'd send one of his dupes to break down her door and she wasn't in the mood to explain that to the landlord.

A quick glance at her alarm clock told her it was barely even six AM.

"What do you want and why are you up so early?"

"Power's down again," she muttered as she slipped into his room. "Got any matches?" This was what happened when you lived in a dump like NYC and your partner didn't like to see you smoke. This was what happened when you gave a damn and actually stopped smoking. No lighter, no light and Candice was reduced to walking around the apartment in the dark.

"I can't sleep and I was working on reports and..." she let out a long breath, knowing he probably didn't care. "Matches, please?"

Open to the bar

There wasn't anything to do in an empty apartment but flip through channels that showed the same propaganda, the same scare tactics and pray she wouldn't have to go to bed alone. Praying led to worrying and from then on she couldn't pull herself out of her state until she called him. She didn't like to seem dependent, no matter how much truth there was to that.

Meet me at O'Shaughnessy's.

It was the best message she could've found waiting on her answering machine and at the best of times. Now, if only Jamie hadn't sounded like the world was ending, then she might've actually looked forward to seeing him.

Waiting in the dim bar fifteen minutes later, her back to the wall and not the door, she only brightened up a little at the thought of company.

There was a cool breeze in the air around the courtyard of the school. The school day was just beginning and the crowds of students in maroon jackets had already dispersed to their various classes. Lucy was late, as she often was, she liked to drive to school and finding a suitable place to park her benz often took more time than the actual commute.

As she approached the building she debated on whether she should bother with home room, which was a waste of her hour anyway, or walk down the street to the library and study for calculus. Lucy didn't expect anyone to be loitering on the school steps as she approached, nor did she expect that they would look directly at her. It seemed like they were waiting, and even more unsettling, they seemed to be waiting for her.

He couldn't make his hands stop shaking.

Resting his forehead against the door, he took a deep breath, trying one more time to fit the key in the lock and letting out a sigh of relief when he hit the mark, turning it and using his shoulder to force the sticking door open. Shutting it behind him and doing up the locks, he slid out of his jacket, moving to hang it up.

"Kirin?" he called, moving further into their small apartment.

Private-ish

The cold of the metal table was seeping through the thin scrubs they'd made him change into, chilling him to the bone. Hands knotted together in his lap, he twisted his ring absently, gray eyes scanning the bright, impossibly clean room. Nerves had led him to scrub his skin nearly raw, the skin angry and fading pink from the scalding water he'd used.

Never signed up for lab rat, he thought with a tinge of irony and also of hysteria, the cold of the room worming its way into his veins. Scare tactics from a man and woman long gone floated into his thoughts, not helping to calm him any. Neither did his silent mantra.

They're just copies. Not people. Not me. They don't matter. They're just copies. Not--

Jamie started as the door to the lab opened.

They worked twelve hour shifts on a day to day basis, but occasionally, they pulled all nighters too. It helped to be used to the workload and the stress when you had to deal with a crisis. Rebels and militia men didn't care if you hadn't slept in days when they set whole buildings on fire. The government knew this. Parkman knew this. It was why there were showers and rooms with bunk beds for nights like these, when she couldn't be bothered to go home and she couldn't stand seeing the same office, the same for walls, again.

Sitting on the top bunk, feet dangling off the side, Candice made a note on a file she wasn't supposed have seen and flipped through to the casualty list for the latest bombing. Fifty dead, twice as many wounded and only a few of them were like her.

"What a waste," she sighed, checking the time on her cell again. One hour 'till the next briefing.

He was getting a damn headache.

Even though he wore the protective earmuffs that were shoved his way upon entering, and even though he'd heard the sound of a gunshot more times than he could count, the continual crack of weapon's firing was starting to pound in his temples. Eyes reflexing darting to his watch, he sighed, raising the Glock once again and firing off. Closer to the target area this time, though he was still going for between the eyes rather than through one of them.

Wiping the the sweat from his brow with his sleeve, he paused to load another clip into the gun, wondering idly if Candice was having better or worse luck.
