Date: Spring 2012
Characters: Candice Wilmer, Kirin Yi
Summary:  The orders were to keep the peace, they were never clear on what methods were to be used.
Warnings: None
Status: In progress

Some questions didn't need to be asked. After the briefing they were told that Kirin and Candice would be sent to a nearby state, due to conflict that had broken out between Enclave and the Milita factions.  It was the responsibility of the the Dept. of National Security to keep the peace, but the mere fact that they were sending Kirin was a sign that the peace was most likely meant to be achieved by force.

Kirin knew that the fact he was being sent instead of Jamie and Candice instead of Jimmy meant it was something that going in with their usual partners would prove to dangerous. They needed the stealth provided from Candice's ability, and Kirin to provide the necessary firepower if it called for it. Which he knew it would.

He looked over at Candice from where he sat in the passenger seat, Kirin was anxious, even moreso that he was out on the field with someone other than Jimmy.  "You know the deal, right? What to do if I...you know, have a panic attack and lose it?" Jimmy was good at handling situations like that, the man's very presence had a calming effect. It was due to having Jimmy as a partner that the extent of how serious Kirin's condition could get was unknown to most.

The one highlight of going out in the field without Jamie was that she could smoke as much as she wanted. Lighting cigarette after cigarette, she tried to keep her mind on the job at hand and not feel anxious about everything that could go wrong.

"I know," she nodded curtly in his direction as they wound through the streets to the outskirts of the city. "I'm not comfortable with it, but I know." Can you try not to have a panic attack, please?

"Just checking," Kirin glanced out the window and checked their surroundings, nothing seemed out of place yet, but according to the reports they'd know they were near the assigned location just from the sounds of the near constant fighting.

"Not that it'll happen, I just wanted to...just in case."

"Right." Her smile betrayed her anxiety. This was Jimmy's territory. He knew how to deal with Kirin's problems. She didn't and being nervous about the man guarding your back was the first step towards trouble in the field.

To distract herself, she clung to conversation. "Why do we have to get involved, anyway? Why not just let them kill each other?"

"Because we have to?" Kirin shrugged, not bothering with giving the textbook answer since their mission was less protecting the innocent and protecting the government. Both the Milita and the Enclave were anti-government, which was enough justification to send field agents out to deal with them.

In Kirin's eyes, there were no good guys, just three sides in varying shades of bad. He just happened to be on the side stuck somewhere in the middle.

"I still say we let them kill each other," she shrugged in turn, the sound of gunfire becoming louder by the minute.

She drove the car off the highway, following the ramp until the disturbance they'd been sent to deal with came into view. It wasn't as impressive as she'd expected. Only a handful of men and women, some armed, some dead.

"This it, you think?" It looked more like a prelude.

"Looks like this might be the edge of it," Kirin said and unbuckled his seatbelt. "I don't think they would have sent you or me if this was just it. Or maybe they killed each other for us and we can go home early."

"Remind me to send them a thank you card, if that's the case," she smirked, the car and the two of them invisible as they stepped out.

"Doesn't look like there's any civilians around..." Which meant no need to play nice.

"That's good." Kirin said with a faint nod, one less thing for him to worry about, and reason for him not to hold back if he needed to go on the offensive.

"Go through, take out the hostiles, and get out before they know what hit them." Kirin muttered, borrowing a line from Jimmy's well-used playbook. Just imitating the other man's words helped push aside the lingering feeling of unease.

There was something surprisingly familiar in the way he spoke, but she brushed it aside, cocking her gun just in case.

"I'll make sure they don't see what hit them... but do me a favor and wait until we get close to the big guns before you do your thing," asked. "I can't keep them from shooting at us."

"I'm not worried about the ones with the guns, more about the ones who don't need them," Kirin said quietly and glanced off to the left. Ahead of them seemed to be two separate groups in the middle of an extended shoot-out. "Do you think they're all normals?"
16th-Oct-2007 09:32 pm (UTC)
A shake of the head.

"Too easy. You send normals to deal with normals, maybe even talk it out like civilized people." You send us to do the dirty work.

She glanced from the thick of the fight to Kirin. "Where do you need to be to finish them off?" Where do you need me to be so I don't end up dead, was courteously left unspoken.

"The less shade, the more I can do at once."

It was a downside of his ability, when he was called on to be destructive, he usually was left standing out in the open. Taking out a large amount of people was a task that couldn't be done under usual cover.

"Just hope there isn't an ambush, hate those..."

"If we've got surprise on our side, there won't be," she sighed, trying for reassurance and ending up doubting it herself. "We'll just get this done and go home. It'll be fine." Just killing a few hundred people, nothing the matter with that.

Surprise, however, also meant knowing what the hell they were doing. Trial and error wasn't an option. Picking up her cell, Candice dialed the required number. "Here's hoping they have satellite following this..."
